History

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated over five days during the Hindu month of Kartika (October-November) and marks the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The most widely known story associates Diwali with Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana, when the city was lit with rows of oil lamps (diyas) to welcome him home. The festival also holds deep meaning for Jains, who mark it as the day Lord Mahavira attained nirvana, and for Sikhs, who celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind Ji from imprisonment.

Importance

Diwali (from the Sanskrit 'Deepavali,' meaning 'row of lights') symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, is worshipped on this day, and homes are cleaned and decorated to welcome her blessings for the year ahead.

How It's Celebrated

Homes and streets are lit with diyas, candles, and colourful lights, and decorated with rangoli patterns at the entrance. Families gather for Lakshmi Puja, exchange gifts and sweets with neighbours and loved ones, and celebrate with fireworks. It is a time for new clothes, festive meals, and reconnecting with family and friends.

Traditional Foods

Food Story

No Diwali celebration is complete without mithai (sweets) shared between family, friends, and neighbours - a tradition that symbolizes sweetness and goodwill for the year ahead. Boxes of gulab jamun, kheer, and other festive sweets are exchanged as gestures of love and blessing.
