Celebrating the Birth of Lord Ganesha
History
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and the revered deity of wisdom, prosperity and new beginnings. According to Hindu tradition, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha and appointed him to guard her chamber. Following an encounter with Lord Shiva, Ganesha was given an elephant’s head and blessed with a special place among the gods. The festival begins on the fourth day of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada and is celebrated with Ganesha idols, prayers, devotional music and offerings such as modak, believed to be one of Ganesha’s favourite sweets. The celebration traditionally concludes with Ganesh Visarjan, symbolizing Ganesha’s return to his divine abode.
Importance
Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles (Vighnaharta) and the god of wisdom, prosperity and new beginnings, which is why his blessings are traditionally sought before starting any new venture, journey or celebration. Ganesh Chaturthi is a time to invite that same blessing into homes and communities.
How It's Celebrated
Families and communities bring home clay idols of Lord Ganesha, which are installed and worshipped for one and a half, five, seven, or ten days depending on tradition. Daily prayers (aarti), devotional songs, and offerings of modak and other sweets are made, and the celebration culminates in Ganesh Visarjan, when the idol is carried in a joyous procession and immersed in water, symbolizing Ganesha's journey back to Mount Kailash.

Modak, a steamed dumpling filled with jaggery and coconut, is believed to be Lord Ganesha's favourite sweet and is offered to him during Ganesh Chaturthi as an essential part of the celebration - a tradition of devotion through food that has been passed down for generations.
