Celebrating the Homecoming of King Mahabal
History
Onam is Kerala’s most celebrated harvest and cultural festival, traditionally associated with the legendary King Mahabali. According to Hindu tradition, Mahabali was a generous and beloved ruler whose reign was remembered as a time of prosperity, equality and happiness. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, granted Mahabali permission to return and visit his people once every year, and Onam celebrates this homecoming. The festival is observed during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September) and includes beautiful Pookalam flower arrangements, traditional dances, Vallam Kali boat races, new clothes and the grand vegetarian feast known as Onam Sadya, served on a banana leaf.

How It's Celebrated
Families create colourful Pookalam flower carpets, wear traditional clothing, visit loved ones, enjoy music and dance, and gather for the Onam Sadya, an elaborate vegetarian meal traditionally served on a banana leaf.
